Bundled Herbs for Smoke Cleansing
CA White Sage (Salvia apiana) & Garden Sage (Salvia officinalis): Healing, health, space clearing. The most popular and the most versatile.
Mugwort* (Salvia or Artemisia, aka Magical Sage, Black Sage, Dream Weed): Protection, divination, restful sleep, vivid dreams, inner healing.
Yerba Santa: This southwestern "holy herb" is burned to honor ancestors, increase psychic powers, and bring physical healing (such as relief of coughing) and protection.
Shasta/Sierra Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentate or californica): is cleansing, purifying, protecting, and encourages inner strength. It brings pleasant thoughts and reduces anxiety, used to treat wounds, headaches and colds by inhaling the smoke. (Aka New Mexico, Desert, Grandmother or Blue). Blends well with other herbs, especially when burned with dragon's blood or copal.
Palo Santo (or "Holy Wood"): This Latin/South American incense helps clear out negative spirits/energies, increase relaxation, and bring joy and harmony to the home. It is in the family of trees that produces Frankincense and Myrrh.
Cedar (Calocedrus decurrens): is the most cleansing, protecting and purifying herb, used by the Medicine Man to exorcise evil spirits and to purify sacred objects. Wise Old Cedar is often used to cleanse a home or apartment when first moving in, inviting unwanted spirits to leave and protecting a person, place or object from unwanted influences. Along with Rosemary, Cedar is one of the most aggressively cleansing smudges you can choose.
Sweetgrass (Hierochloe oderata): aka Holy Grass, is traditionally used for blessings, healing ceremonies and Smudging Rituals, especially to drive out evil. It produces a sweet-scented smoke similar to some incenses. Potentially over-harvested and soon might become endangered.
Lavender (Hyptis emoryi): is calming, peaceful, inspires love and relieves anxiety.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalus): clears negativity, inspires confidence, and invigorating.
